Located 160km from Sri Lanka’s economic capital of Colombo, and just a few minutes away from the ancient town of Dambulla, the Heritance Kandalama is an oasis of luxury and relaxation.
Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the 2,000-year-old cave temple at Dambulla and the Sigiriya rock fortress are just minutes away from the Hotel. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, ancient cities that date back to before the beginning of the Common Era, as well as the Minneriya wildlife sanctuary are situated within driving distance. The Heritance Kandalama is an ideal base to explore Sri Lanka's ancient heritage and its rich natural environment.An eco hotel created by arguably Sri Lanka's foremost architect the late Geoffrey Bawa.
Kandalama was one of his pet projects, it created a great deal of fuss from its inception. No one thought it could be built without destroying a very sensitive local environment, in a remote dry region of Sri Lanka. There were a great many protests, strikes and delays.
Today, it is an outstanding success story, not only in its eco friendly design, but in that it provides sustainable development and employment in a region which is otherwise desperately poor. Kandalama is an awarded "eco hotel" by international standards. The food is well renowned and so is the infinity pool perched on a rock ledge over looking jungle and Kandalama lake, where elephants sometimes walk by in the evening. Kandalama is an
expression of Geoffrey Bawa "and what an expression".
A note worthy activity is early morning hot air ballooning over the Sigiriya area;
that's if your budget allowes.
